One and other door Antony Gormley, 2000
Grote levensvraag Alle manfiguren die Gormley gemaakt heeft zijn beeltenissen van hemzelf. Hij vindt zijn lichaam "the closest experience of matter that I will ever have"; zijn werk omschrijft hij als een onderzoek naar het lichaam “as a place of memory and transformation”. De kunstenaar stelt dat de hoge bevolkingsdruk van het
moderne stadsleven maakt dat het van levensbelang is " to take the time
and space to open up our minds to the elements. We are all aware that we are coming to the
point where there will be 10 billion human beings on this planet. The big
question that I'm asking with all of these works is, 'where does the human
project fit, in the scheme of things?"
Anoniem en universeel YSP-info: Gormley believes that art must be capable
of many things: as well as considering works as sculptural objects, he also
feels they should make the onlooker aware of their surroundings, themselves
and of their own existence. With ‘One and other’, the figure’s absence of
